Let your loved ones know you're thinking about them with a thoughtful greeting card.

I made the artwork for these cards using the alternative photography techniques of soil chromatography and cyanotypes. Alternative photography means making photographs without a camera. Soil chromatography is like taking a photo of the compounds and bacteria that make up soil and plants, and cyanotypes are photographic blueprints.

You will receive a conventionally sized greeting card that is approximately 4-5/8" x 7-1/4" greeting card. Each card comes with a standard 4-3/4" x 7-1/2" white envelope. Note that while I have uploaded photos that match the prints' colors as closely as I can, colors may vary among different computer monitors. What appears on your monitor may not reflect the exact shades of color in the print.

We Are All Seeds, Plant Yourself with Love and Care

Puer tea invites people to enjoy a grounded and meditative tea drinking experience. So too does this card adorned with artistic and scientific puer tea chromatograms. The exterior of the card says, "we are all seeds," while the interior says, "plant yourself with love and care."

The Land Loves You and So Do I

The print featured on this card was showcased in my January 2024 solo exhibition, Mari Miller: The Land Loves Us, at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago. It is a chromatogram of a pear my cousin Sik Fi gave me from his garden in Chicago's Chinatown. I view soil chromatograms as helping us glimpse the spirit of the land, and thus the land's love for us. The exterior of this card reminds you of that by saying, "The Land Loves You and So Do I," while the interior is free of text and lightly decorated with more chromatograms, giving you plenty of space to tell your loved one why they're so special to you.

You Make Winter Feel Warmer

Winters can be brutal, but I hope that this chromatogram of white tea from Hoisan helps you feel closer to the warmth of the Earth and the coming spring. The front of the card evokes soil greeting the sky during the first thaw of the spring. The inside says, "you make winter feel warmer."

Chives Chromatogram

I made the original chromatogram this card is based on using the roots and stems of Chinese Chives that I grew in my community garden plot in Chicago. It's one of my absolute favorite chromatograms and one of my most popular prints too, which is why I left this card free of text, so you can choose whatever occasion you like for gifting it to someone. The original print featured in my exhibition, Mari Miller: The Land Loves Us, at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago in January 2024.

Mulberry Cyanotype

A week before my local park cut down a stand of mulberry trees, I was able to harvest a few leaves for cyanotype prints, like the one on the cover of this card. I didn't know at the time that the trees were going to be cut down, so I'm all the more grateful to have a record of it on the front of this card. While this card features cyanotypes of leaves in my neighborhood, it does not have any written text so that you may use it for a variety of occassions.

Soil chromatography is often used by farmers to qualitatively assess soil health. I’ve spent the past two and a half years widening the creative possibilities of this lesser known soil science test.

I use soil chromatography to extract the normally invisible compounds and bacteria in plants and soil, then illuminate them using silver nitrate, a classic photography chemical. Each color and striation signifies a separate compound or bacteria present in the tea, fruit, or plant I used to make the chromatograms (one-of-a-kind prints made using chromatography).

My work with chromatography is intrinsically related to the land, and some of my chromatograms are made using food and plants grown on stolen land. Indigenous communities are the land's strongest defenders, so 10% of each chromatogram sale gets donated to Indigenous communities.

Every purchase of a physical item receives a free postcard. One per order. The current postcards include a picture of one of my favorite chromatograms, Chinese Chive Roots and Stems, that I grew in my community garden plot in Chicago.
